LAW GRADUATE OPPORTUNITY (RECRUITMENT CONSULTANT)
This week we had a very refreshing meeting with one of the Top Legal Recruitment firms in the UK, one of our clients at MPL Search.
Why was it refreshing? Well, the Director we met (virtually) was sat at home, relaxed but energised about the company he’s joined and telling us a very clear plan they have to build and shake up their company over the next couple of years.
Graduates
Firstly, we see Graduates as the future of our business, training Grads up rather than hiring people who already have experience, empowering them and giving them the opportunity to progress quickly and be a significant part of the team quickly. We also insist on hiring multiple Graduates at once, to give them a natural peer group, increase shared learning and support for one another, as well as a social element.
Rewards
Most recruitment companies pay you commission for success-based metrics, i.e. when you make a placement that generates revenue for the firm, you get a cut. This can take time to come through, sometimes 3-6 months because of lead times with the placements they make – who are mainly Associate Level Solicitors working at top 50 UK Law firms. They still do this too, but additionally they’ve implemented a commission scheme that rewards junior consultants for arranging meetings between candidates and consultants – they’ve identified that rewarding for effort and behaviours as well as for outcomes is more gratifying for their trainees. It means they earn commission sooner than at any other firm. Although a simple solution, I think this really taps into more modern thinking that focussing on doing the job well, providing a good service and learning excellence, if rewarded in itself, will lead naturally to longer term success and revenue. Simple but clever stuff.
Office / Home balance
They have embraced this, working 2 days a week from the office and 3 from home each week. Their staff are more refreshed, with less commute times, they feel trusted and empowered to do their jobs without micromanagement, as well as feeling safe and limiting contact with people on tubes and trains. When they do come into the office they are excited to see their team and colleague, look forward to collaborating and driving each other forward. They have core hours but have the flexibility to start and finish in line with the hours that suit them.
Team Support
Cleverly they have also identified that Recruiters are not always natural administrators, and have found a way to let them focus on their jobs, talking to clients and candidates – whilst bringing in Team Support professionals who take a lot of the leg work away from Recruiters, they load CV’s onto their database, code them correctly, format CV’s in House styles, arranging and confirming the consultants’ interviews and meetings. All this to allow Recruiters to Recruit without the shackles of admin.
TLDR
These roles pay a £25,000 salary, you can earn up to £50,000 in your first year
You’ve got to be driven, you must have decent academics, ideally a Legal background of sorts (LLB/GDL/LPC/LLM) but most importantly you’ll be inspired by this style of modern, forward thinking environment and know that you’re the type of person who’ll thrive in it.
